Caveman Citra

It has been one of England’s finest days so far this year and I’m sat in one of our favourite local(ish) pubs, the Hare and Billet in Blackheath with a tankard of Caveman Citra.

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake

It comes with half an inch of foamy head that looks like whisked egg whites (not in a bad way, I promise) and if it ends up tasting like baked goods I wouldn’t mind. It’s a calm, still brew with a slightly murky aura and the colour of warm pinewood.

It smells (faintly) of all the good things: lemons, more citrus fruits, yeast and hoppiness and I’m sure I haven’t just gotten it into my head – but it really does smell a little like lemon drizzle cake too! It’s a little sweet, a little savoury, and a little bitter. It rolls over your tongue caressing each taste sensory section, exploring each continent of your tongue, taking a #selfie and posting it on twitter. There are flavours of lemons, faint sweet clementine and a twang of hops that nuzzle your bitter patch. It’s a smooth drink, but not smooth as in flat – far from it. The taste is wonderful but short-lived. The after taste is a bit sweet but fizzles out quite quickly just leaving a quite long lasting hoppy bitterness.

Bake me a cake…

This Caveman Citra pretty much is a liquid lemon drizzle cake. Not at all what I was expecting, but it’s good! It’s definitely not sickly and it’s light, refreshing and adventurous on my tongue, not just giving me what I expected but more that I didn’t. I’m definitely off to have a weekend of beer and baking.

Caveman Citra is fresh and a little tangy a bit like lemon drizzle cake.

    • Actually yes! I would very much like to make a lemon cake with Citra. I think it will be heavier/moister than some lemon sponges, but if it’s light enough in flavour I reckon it would make a great treat. I’m still keeping my eyes open for a bottle!
